Preventative Care

Taking Care of our Gurnee & Vernon Hills Pediatric Dentistry Patients

Here at Affiliated Dental Specialists, our Vernon Hills and Gurnee children’s dentists believe that the best way to keep our patients happy and healthy is by maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine at home and routine dental visits. Dr. Orbon and Dr. Maddox take a variety of measures in order to ensure that our young patients avoid future dental problems that can end up being costly and painful.

How Are Cavities Prevented?

For infants, use a wet gauze or clean washcloth to wipe the plaque from an infant’s teeth and gums. Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle filled with anything other than water.

Older children should brush their teeth at least twice a day. Try to limit the number of sugary snacks they eat.

Our Vernon Hills pediatric dentists may also recommend protective sealants or home fluoride treatments for your child, to prevent decay on hard to clean surfaces.

Check Up Visits with our Pediatric Dentists in Gurnee & Vernon Hills

At every visit we will perform a thorough examination, evaluating your child’s teeth, gums and other areas of the mouth. Your child will receive detailed oral hygiene instructions, a cleaning and Fluoride treatment. Cavity detecting x-rays will be taken as needed.

We believe that consistent, 6 month checkup appointments are the best way to ensure a lifetime of positive dental experiences for your child.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealant is a white or clear resin bonded to the hard-to-clean grooves of molars or premolars. Sealants are usually applied to the teeth as a preventative measure soon after the teeth have erupted. Some children’s molars have deeper grooves and pits giving them a higher risk for chewing surface cavities. Our children’s dentists in Gurnee and Vernon Hills will evaluate your child’s teeth to determine their risk and will apply dental sealants accordingly.

Sealants act as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, protecting the decay-prone areas of these teeth. Your child’s teeth will be easier to clean, decreasing their risk for cavities in the future.
